IT’S BEEN A WHILE
I have spent the last year making posts about this upcoming film I am working on titled If There’s An Emergency, a long, in-depth short thriller, and something I am very excited about making. I announced it, then had to put it on hold because of work, then announced that I was back in pre-production.
In fact, I have a great deal of pre-visualization done. A script, a storyboard, an animatic, camera maps, a mood board, a script breakdown, a lined script, and was at the point where I was ready to officially pull in producers and begin full pre-production.
Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that I once again need to put the project on hold.
WAIT, WHAT?
Yes, all caps heading that I come up with in the spur of the moment, I’m putting the film on hold. It’s for personal reasons, but they are reasons I am fine with elaborating a bit.
As I mentioned in my last blog post, being a person of transgender experience right now is very harrowing. I started my transition in 2021, and have been fortunate enough to make great progress with myself and overcoming my dysphoria. For the first time in my life, I am truly comfortable with myself and my identity. However, even with this self-acceptance, there are still more steps in transitioning that I need to take in order to fully master said dysphoria.
Our new administration has already released multiple executive orders built to target trans people, including ending federal funding for transition of those under minors, censoring discussion of gender identity in school, erasing non-cisgender identities from government documents, rescinding the ability to get a gender change on federal identification, and requiring trans inmates to be housed in prisons of their assigned gender at birth.
Many of these policies are unconstitutional and all are frankly idiotic and unscientific. Unfortunately, they are also dangerous, and are adding to the state governments across the country doing everything they can to put access to gender affirming care in jeopardy.
If There’s An Emergency is a project that is very important to me. It’s cool, full of interesting characters, cool sequences, and will push my filmmaking to new limits. However, to reach those limits would mean I would need to divert attention from the healthcare I need, and possibly risk losing my access to it all together. It became a choice, and I chose the one that is more important to me as a person.
SO DOES THIS MEAN NO PROJECTS AT ALL IN 2025?
Not at all! In fact, in addition to my work freelancing on set (I’m down for script supervising if you have an open position!), I have a few other projects I am or plan to be working on this year. All are creatively fulfilling, but none require the complexity and scheduling associated with If There’s An Emergency.
And I suppose I can give a tiny sneak preview of what some of those projects are:
A comedy feature film script about a family Christmas party gone wrong
A small comic strip about a wombat
A multimedia documentary project
A new category of blog posts about my current engagement with art
And more! (Well I can’t just reveal everything!)
So thank you for joining me on this journey thus far. I really appreciate the support I have already received, and not only do I hope you are there when we do recommence work on If There’s An Emergency, but that you also keep an eye out for my other upcoming projects!
And, if you are still looking for something else to do to keep yourself entertained or, you know, fight against the oligarchy using fascist and theocratic ethos to control us. Then please, keep aware of the news (I didn’t even mention the threats to immigration, abortion, education, disease control, refugees, and climate action that we face above), and do everything you can to resist the hideousness we face. Volunteer, donate, protest, publicly support minorities and causes, support unions, support journalists, call your government representatives (local, state, and federal), whatever you can. Remember, this is not and should not be normal.
